A partnership between Renew Rocktown, the Shenandoah Chapter of the Sierra Club, and Climate Action Alliance of the Valley (and support from partners below) the 2019 Harrisonburg Solar Census aimed to map out what solar looks like in the Friendly City. Our small city has some of the most solar per capita in the state, so what does it look like? Where to next? This project aimed to capture our solar story.
The effort launched in March 2019 with a 3-week outreach effort, inviting solar owners (business, residents, and non-profits) to fill out a brief form describing their solar array, why they went solar, and when. The outreach effort culminated in a Volunteer Day, where teams went out across the city to invite those solar owners who had not yet participated to add their array to the census. We then displayed this information on an interactive MAP accessible to community leaders and residents. We received over 115 responses, capturing around 80% of all solar in Harrisonburg at the time (as well as a handful of arrays in Rockingham County). The map helps tell our solar story, and invites us to think about where we want to go!
